Does Instagram Remove EXIF Data?

Yes — Instagram re-encodes uploads and strips nearly all EXIF, including GPS, from the displayed image. You cannot download GPS coordinates from someone's Instagram photo under normal use.

But three leaks remain: (1) photos you send as files (email, DM file attachments, AirDrop) keep EXIF; (2) the original on your phone still has it if the account is ever accessed; (3) other platforms you cross-post to may preserve more. Clean the file before it leaves your device — then whatever Instagram does is a second layer, not your only one.
