What is photo metadata?

Every photo from a phone or camera can carry invisible metadata: EXIF camera settings and timestamps, GPS coordinates, XMP descriptors, IPTC authorship, embedded thumbnails, and comments. Social posts, marketplace listings, and job applications routinely leak this data to anyone who downloads the file. Our EXIF viewer shows you exactly what is inside before you share.

What gets removed?

  • JPEG: EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC/Photoshop segments, embedded thumbnails, and COM comments are stripped at the segment level — verified by re-scanning the output.
  • PNG / WebP: files are re-encoded without metadata chunks.
  • HEIC (iPhone): converted to widely compatible JPEG, then cleaned.
  • Color profiles (ICC) are preserved where present so colors don't shift.

Why GPS data is the biggest risk

A single iPhone photo can embed coordinates accurate to a few meters — enough to reveal a home address. If GPS is detected, the tool flags it and offers a private map preview so you can confirm the exposure, then verifies its removal after cleaning. Read the FAQ for step-by-step verification.

Image quality and limitations

JPEG-to-JPEG cleaning copies image data without recompression, so pixels are preserved — the verification report on each file confirms this. PNG, WebP, and format conversions are re-encoded, which may slightly alter quality. Cleaning removes metadata, not visible content: it won't blur faces, license plates, or text already burned into pixels. For documents, see the PDF metadata wiper (metadata only — not redaction).

How verification works

  2. Click "Clean Metadata" — segments are stripped or the image is re-encoded.
